Drug Abuse Nebraska: College Students in Nebraska Can Find Scholarships a Way to Achieve Their Dreams

The state of Nebraska is not that well known for need-based grants. On the other hand, the citizens themselves have created so many different legitimate scholarship plans that apparently no one website can possibly list them all. To address this situation, the state has not one, but two different organizations that help in getting these awards into the right college students’ hands.

The first is the Education Quest Foundation. It created a program called ScholarshipQuest that helps match up appropriate scholarships to the right students. With a motto of “Reaching Your Potential,” it can help a student generate anywhere from $ 2,000 to $ 8,000 a year towards their academic goals. It should also be noted that it primarily works on helping students go to Nebraska state schools.

The other group is the Lincoln Community Foundation. Founded in 1955, it helps families and communities find scholarships that tend to be smaller and much more specialized than those provided by Education Quest. At the same time, it has a reputation for generating an extra $ 200 to $ 2,000 a year for those who’ve earned the right to go on for an advanced education.

Then there is the Capital City Footprinters. They administer their own scholarship program to the citizens of Lancaster County. The Post-Secondary Scholarship, also known as the Richard A. Aksamit Memorial Scholarship, awards students of Criminal Justice or Fire Science anywhere up to $ 500 a year. It also makes this money available for post-graduates looking to complete their masters and PhD programs.

Another independent scholarship is the Norma Ross Walter Scholarship. This plan is open to young women either about to enter or already enrolled in a state university. It awards $ 1,000 to English majors provided they supply two letters of recommendation, complete an essay and provide their academic transcript. It is administered through the Willa Cather Foundation.

A much broader program is the Rural Schools Scholarship. It is open to any student who comes from a town whose population is under 10,000. The must also have either graduated in the top 10% of their class or are maintaining a 3.5 grade point average if they are already in college. Each year it awards $ 500 to $ 2,000 to four deserving students.

If students are socially conscious and feel they are good at writing essays, they should try for the Drug & Alcohol Abuse Prevention Essay Contest Scholarship. It picks one winner each year, and the high school graduate must write about their experience with drugs, whether from a personal or observational point of view. The winner gets $ 500 for the best essay, which must be 600-1,000 words long.

As said before, there are a number of other scholarships available in this state. Besides consulting Education Quest and the Lincoln Foundation, one should take the initiative to do a little research on their own, searching for online college grants and scholarships. Students may also be interested in online certificate programs that would gear their education toward more immediate and specified employment. By going on the net and keeping a good relationship with a college financial aid advisor, it’s quite likely to find a number of other scholarships waiting to be taken.

Rossville woman’s push for medical marijuana in Georgia gains momentum – Is Georgia ready for medical marijuana? Heather Boles of Rossville thinks so. Boles is gathering signatures to petition legislators to legalize medicinal marijuana, like neighboring states that have pushed for legalization, including Tennessee, Alabama, Arkansas, Kansas and Nebraska. Boles, who has collected more than 2000 signatures for the cause, wants the state to consider the medical bene-fits of cannabis sativa and join the other 14 states that already have medicinal marijuana facilities. “I would like to see blanket legalization, but I realize that there is a responsible way about going about things and I think the best way is to test the waters and see if our citizens have the ability for freedom to choose,” Boles said. “Georgia is in a unique position to look at other state policies and construct a policy that is on the forefront of compassionate care. It is really about our right to choose what is right for our own bodies.” Boles, who is allergic to morphine, believes that marijuana should be reclassified from a Schedule 1 substance, where heroine and cocaine are grouped. “Not one single death or injury has been reported from putting marijuana into the human body,” Boles said. According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse, there have been no deaths attributed to the direct use of marijuana. • TalkToChuckk says:

    Bring it to? GA!

  • Reggieworth says:

you are right, however there is no established LD50? [dose that kills 50% of a population] for cannabis but the LD50 for caffeine is known to be about 200mg/kg body weight

you are also correct about the driving. several studies and statistical analysis by insurance companies have concluded driving under the influence of cannabis is far less dangerous than alcohol & in some studies even showed improvements over being straight

  • Reggieworth says:

“most ppl involved with drugs dont have? the mental capacity left to make the sound judgement”
wow, you just post bigoted statements wherever you go huh?

“why do u think the made it illegal?”
becasue racist legislators saw primarily mexican & black people using it
    “im voting no”
    i doubt you even vote

“make sure that this wouldnt b abused”
you mean like the dozens of legal by perscription opiate drugs?

im glad your argument is so weak, anyone reading? it will be compelled to vote ‘yes’

  • paraguayo2 says:

Goes to show how hypocritical our government is in regards to this issue. The FDA approves drugs that kill thousands each year yet Cannabis is deemed “to have a high potential for abuse, and has no currently accepted medical use in treatment in the United States” when this plant has been used for thousands? of years as medicine. Just sayin

  • paraguayo2 says:

There is a difference between synthetic drugs and marijuana. I’m not saying? drugs are ok but marijuana should definitely not be categorized among hard drugs. I have done my fair share of research on cannabis and it’s effects within the human body, and if you say you know about marijuana we would not be discussing this right now, because something as inoffensive should have never been made illegal to begin with. You can take 12 aspirins and die but marijuana for some reason is listed as schedule1

  • gagirl0115 says:

ur the one that needs to read. i have been around a very long time so i have seen what drugs do to ppl. im not reacting on an emotional level as u? seem to b.

  • paraguayo2 says:

I? would like to see a source where someone was killed because of marijuana. You will never find it because it has never happened! Have you ever even tried marijuana, how would you know if it makes you make unwise decisions? The only unwise decision you would probably make while you’re on cannabis is eating all the food in the fridge lol! You are greatly misinformed on this subject and i really suggest you do more research on it.

  • gagirl0115 says:

what difference does it make how it became illegal? it alters the users ability to think coherently and they make unwise decisions. how many ppl have been killed by the? actions of a user that was smoking pot?

  • paraguayo2 says:

Driving? while on cannabis is no where near as dangerous as driving under the influence of alcohol which is totally legal btw.

  • paraguayo2 says:

Cannabis? is no more of a drug than caffeine is.

  • paraguayo2 says:

You should do the research yourself on why it was made illegal and might be surprised to find out it was because of racism and ignorance (hence the term reefer? madness) of a select group of people who were in power. Hemp was a readily used for many uses both medically and industrially until a guy named Harry Anslinger came along. Also the cotton industry tried to make sure it became illegal, because hemp was so superior to cotton and much easier to manufacture.

  • gagirl0115 says:

most ppl involved with drugs dont have the mental capacity left to make the sound judgement of whether they need marijuana or not. why do u think the made it illegal? geez!!! im voting no because of these reasons and there is no way to? make sure that this wouldnt b abused.

  • gagirl0115 says:

what if they decide to take a drive? arm themselves? hurt? a child? this is just wrong on all levels!!!

  • NeeKroVal says:

  • tombraiderchuck says:

legalize and tax it pay off the national debt in 5? years

  • Soullessbastard says:

I completely agree with you. I was diagnosed w MS in 1997 and have been getting worse ever since the only thing that seems to help w the pain? and nausea is canabis. Although its still illegal here I hope that one day they’ll decrimanlize it. Until then I have no choice but to risk my freedom in order to live a somewhat managable life. God bless to all who are trying to get this passed.

  • kirkwoodshawdy says:
