Omaha Drug Use: Dietary Supplements 101
General Health
Multi-Vitamins, calcium, glucosamine, anti-oxidants, etc… these are some of the most common “general health” supplements. The basic purpose of a general health supplement is to work as a sort of “safety net”, providing additional nutritional support where your daily nutritional habits may fall short. These supplements won’t make you muscular or skinny, but they may just help you feel or function better!
Hypertrophy
Creatine, BCAA’s, weight gain powders, etc… these are examples of hypertrophy supplements. The basic purpose of a hypertrophy supplement is to promote muscle growth. Increasing your caloric intake and making sure you consume enough amino acids to repair your muscle tissue following an intense bout of training will improve your ability to build muscle. That being said, aside from anabolic steroids and growth hormone (both of which are illegal) not many supplements have been proven to actually work in this sense.
Fat Loss
No examples are needed here! We all see advertisements for fat loss supplements every day of our lives. These products are what have turned the supplement industry into a multi-billion dollar-per-year monster! Most are thermogenics, using caffeine, green tea, and other stimulants to stimulate the central nervous system and force a higher calorie burn in the user. These products, when combined with proper nutrition and exercise have helped many people lose excess body-fat quicker than what would have been possible without. Unfortunately, others have fallen short of this goal and in some cases have presented multiple health risks, some very serious.
Not Regulated by the FDA
The Food & Drug Administration does not consider supplements to be medications. Because of this view supplements are not regulated by the FDA. This means that while there are several good products on the market, there are also some that do not necessarily deliver on their enthusiastic promises. Of course like medications, supplements may also be dangerous if taken incorrectly or in conjunction with another supplement or medication. This is why it is always a good idea to check with your doctor before taking anything!
